ROBERT THOMAS REGOLA III, a former Democrat, is running as a Republican for the Pennsylvania Senate seat in Westmoreland County's 39th District. He is attempting to unseat Allen Kukovich who is a two-term Senator and a good man with a long history of bipartisan respect in both houses of the Pennsylvania Legislature. Fresh from their candidates making some gains in recent Westmoreland County elections, the "new" GOP has decided to target Allen Kukovich who is one of the Democratic Party's best and hardest working Senators. According to recent news articles, wealthy Republicans have spent about $500,000 on this campaign to get Allen out of office.
As their chosen candidate to defeat Kukovich, Bob Regola has spent the Republicans' money on dozens of billboards, thousands of signs, radio spots, annoying automated phone calls to voters' homes, and a never-ending stream of slick and fancy full-color flyers mailed to voters in the 39th district. The volume and extent (and spending!) of Bob Regola's campaign has drawn national attention. And sadly, other than a few empty promises about taxes and family values, the main focus of Bob Regola's Karl-Rove-style campaign has been to smear Allen Kukovich with lies and petty issues.
